Interview Body Language Tips: What Your Nonverbal Cues Say About You

Master the body language of successful interviewees. Learn how posture, gestures, and facial expressions impact your interview performance.

Body language communicates more than words in an interview setting. Research suggests that nonverbal cues account for a significant portion of the impression you make. Mastering your body language ensures that your physical presence reinforces rather than contradicts your verbal messages.

Posture sets the foundation for confident body language. Sit up straight with your shoulders back and feet flat on the floor. Lean slightly forward to show engagement. Avoid slouching, which signals disinterest, or sitting too rigidly, which can appear tense and uncomfortable.

Hand gestures should complement your words, not distract from them. Use natural, purposeful gestures to emphasize key points. Keep your hands visible and avoid nervous habits like fidgeting, playing with a pen, or touching your face. Steepling your fingers can project confidence when used naturally.

Facial expressions are particularly important in creating rapport. Maintain a natural, pleasant expression that shows engagement and warmth. Smile genuinely when appropriate, especially during greetings and when discussing topics that genuinely excite you. Avoid forced smiles that can appear insincere.

Eye contact builds trust and connection. In one-on-one interviews, maintain eye contact for sixty to seventy percent of the conversation. In panel interviews, direct your initial eye contact to the person asking the question, then include other panel members as you deliver your response.
